Here's my first illustration of 2010. I won't have a lot of time to do many more full illustrations over the next couple of months. I will still be posting a lot of other artwork though. Maybe even some short animations so stay posted.

IT'S COMING

I signed up to volunteer for GDC yesterday, and decided to start a new blog as a catalyst for new concept art of a complex and fertile world. I originally started the above picture as a design for a vinyl toy painting, but after signing up as a conference associate, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to kick this thing off. Essentially, I'm beefing up my portfolio for the conference, and I'm going to create a narrative to share with everyone on the blog. The blog itself won't be ready until after March, and I may post some stuff on illustration updates early, but mostly you'll just have to wait.
The story, for those of you that are interested, is going to revolve around two planets in a distant solar system that were on a collision course. The inhabitants worked together to create a permanent solution to the dilemma, by attempting to connect their worlds. When the demands of this task can't be met a third race from a neighboring planet steps in to help, and successfully brings the two worlds into an age of harmony.
This good deed comes with a price. between the two worlds a stronghold is to be constructed. The inhabitants don't know what for, but after nearly a millennium of hard work the structure is completed and a new task is needed. The collection of interdimensional wildlife. The story will follow the trials and tribulations of one young cadet as he tries to wrap his mind around the complexities of the task that has been bestowed upon him, and you'll get to journey with him through illustration, and concept art.

MY FIRST PIN UP

So I've been working on Concept Art to build my portfolio for a while now, and I've been applying to a lot of jobs. For anyone that's had to do so, you know it can be disparaging at times. So to cheer myself up I decided to do my first personal piece in a long time, and it made me realize, how much I've learned in photoshop, and it's tools.
A while back there was a Darkstalkers art book that came out, and it seems like everyone on Deviantart.com was posting a lot of art for it. For some reason I noticed one character more than the others, Morrigan. This fact and my love of pinup art inspired me to do my own fan art.
This also inspires me to do more pinup art in the future. I'm going to post this piece on Deviant Art and I've decided if it gets a daily deviation that I would do another nerdy genre pinup girl. There are so many to choose from. Feel free to let me know any of the ones you'd like to see, and I'll consider them for future pieces. Enjoy!

ART FAIR AND A NEW HOME FOR MY ART

Hi all! I recently I heard back from one of the purchasers of two of my favorite original works. They wanted to let me know how much they appreciate the art and sent me a picture of the works in their ceramic frames at their new home, and I can't be more pleased with this. They look happy in their new home. I also got to talk to the people that purchased them, and I'm reassured that these two artworks are in good hands.
Speaking of selling artwork, you can also expect to find me at the CCA Winter Fair this upcoming weekend. So, if you like my work I will have both originals and prints available for purchase. This will include but won't be limited to my zombie couple and first kiss prints. I hope every one can make it to that as well. I have some new works for it that are not yet posted on the internet. So come out and stop by. Even if it's just to say hi.
Also I was back at sketch Tuesday last week. You can expect pictures from that some time this week, and some of the art from it will be up for sale at the holiday fair too. So, expect another blog entry soon :D

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

I decided to punch out a practice drawing in photoshop. It's always refreshing to look learn and draw. Sometimes doing your own thing can get stale without these basics. If you're in a rut, get out and draw, or you can just paint from a photo like I did. However, when I'm on BART or waiting somewhere with nothing better to do you can bet I have my sketchpad out.

For this picture I was mostly working on lighting, and drawing a tilted head in photoshop.

DR SKETCHY'S SKETCHES

Once a month Dr. Sketchy's holds a figure drawing session at 111 Minna in San Francisco. I attended one for the first time recently and the sketches you see above are the results. I'm satisfied with what I ended up with. The model was awesome, the other artists were friendly, and the music selection, for the evening, was right up my alley. All in all I had a great night. I just wish it was longer than three hours. When you're drawing, that feels like the equivalent of three minutes. I believe they have a different model every month, so unfortunately Flame Cynders won't be returning this month, but I look forward to seeing their next choice. I have no doubt it will be a good selection. Hope to see some of you there this month.
