QUICK CONCEPT ART FOR MELVIN THE SNOWMAN

This post and the one below it are a batch of some of the quick concepts I did for a storyboarding class. The story is about a snowman that tries to stop Santa from delivering presents to a young boy on Christmas. The assignment was about dialogue, and so when it came to the boards I tried to challenge myself by keeping the scene interesting and visually communicative with very little action and mostly dialogue. I want to convert these boards to digital files and post them, but that won't be for a little while. However, feel free to enjoy the quick concepts I did for Santa and Melvin beforehand.

BRUCE WAYNES THE BATMAN?!

For anyone who has seen the Dark Knight and wondered why Commissioner Gordon was the last to figure this out, and only after Batman did everything but spell it out for him.
After joking about this on a late night in the computer lab, I decided more artwork needed to be done on commissioner Gordon realizing Bruce Wayne was "the" Batman at inappropriate moments. So if you want to take on the challenge toss me a link to your image and I'll put it up on my page. Oh the possibilities!

DISAPPEARED FOR A WHILE

A while back I disappeared and went to Idaho. I went on a lot of hikes and observed a lot of nature. Something good for any artist, generally stuck indoors the majority of their life, to do. I have a bulk of pictures, but for the sake of not overloading I'm just going to post five of my favorite, and yes that first one is of a penguin walking around like he owned the damn plane on the flight there. Enjoy!

FAN ART FRIDAY . . . A DAY EARLY: STAR TREK MUSINGS

I'm predicting that I'll be quite busy tomorrow and might not have time to post this. So here's a fanart Friday post a day early.
Thanks to the amount of makeup applied to make these characters feel real every episode I've really come to appreciate the exaggeration and creativity that goes into the craft. It's not unlike what I do with my hand drawn work and I hope to draw more of these in the future. I might even do a full color wall paper version for Trek fans in the not too distant future.

MONSTER GIRLS: DEMON, ZOMBIE

Hi all! I've been in the process of fixing up some of my internet sites. I had to let go of my webhosting, but have attached the domain name to this blog. So now jamesctrujillo.com is synonymous with jstillustration.blogspot.com. I also went on a trip to Idaho for a little over a week and got a good healthy dose of the outdoors. I've been working a lot in the mean time and decided to get back up to speed on here. For now, here are some monster ladies. Enjoy!

30 DAY MONSTER GIRL CHALLENGE DAY 1: HARPY

Another harpy challenge? Yep, and I enjoyed this one just as much as the first. Hope you do too. Sorry for the dry spell. I've been working like a hound on multiple projects, and there are still many I'd love to get back to, but can't at the moment. I'm going to try my best to toss up as many new drawings and updates over the next month to make up for it, but as for now I hope you like my old Granny Harpy! I know she looks like she's about to fall over, but shhhh ;-)

111 MINNA GALLERY PAINTINGS AT SKETCH TUESDAY

Here are a few of the paintings I completed at Minna on Tuesday. Unfortunately, these poor guys never found a home. I decided to with Griffins this time around since they are without a doubt my favorite mythological creatures. Hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I did drawing and painting them.

GREAT SCOTS, A DRAWING CHALLENGE!!!

This challenge was based on highlanders, and in celebration of Brave I couldn't pass it up. To get myself psyched for seeing the movie tonight I decided to draw my favorite cartoon highlander. The Scotsman from Samurai Jack. I know I just did a fan piece, but I had forgotten about the challenge and decided the Scotsman needed to be part of it. Enjoy!

FANART FRIDAY: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES MICHELANGELO

It's been a while since I've done one of these, but the time was ripe. What child doesn't love pizza and ninjas (but James I was a child once and I didn't care for either of those things) If you were thinking this after my statement then you are, of course, banished from my blog, I'll even throw a smoke bomb as you leave so that you're forced to vanish like a ninja. Anyhowww, it's clear I loved the ninja turtles as a child, I loved the side scrolling arcade game, I loved the cartoon, I plastered my possessions with those metalic looking stickers from those quarter operated vending machines, and I especially loved the first movie, it still holds up to this day in my honest opinion. The second one was decent too, but don't even speak to me about the time traveling to medieval Japan one.
Being not only a product of the eighties but also a California guy Michelangelo was without a doubt my favorite turtle. Also I have a soft spot for characters that are not only humorous, but also don't take themselves too seriously.
I've always liked the idea of the turtles actually being different types of turtles. I don't exactly know why, but after studying design and storytelling I like the idea even more. Each character could have their own shapes and silhouettes making it so you wouldn't have to rely on the color of their mask or what weapons their holding to know who each character is and what their personality is like. For this reason I decided Michelangelo should be a sea turtle. Pretty much because of his mellow nature, and the tie-in to the sea, and possibly surfing. I would hang out with Mikey any day just so long as we didn't have to hang out in the sewer. You hear that Mikey? The pizzas on me!

Also, I'd have to look into it more, but I imagine Raph as a snapper turtle, and Donatello and Leonardo as a more common type of turtle (maybe a slider turtle) and maybe twins.

STUDIES FROM WAYNE TIPPETS STREET STYLE AESTHETIC BLOG

As I've said before everyone once in a while I'll check some fashion blogs for pictures to do some fashion/character studies from. The one I've been checking in on these days has been Street Style Aesthetic This one seems to be my favorite all around. Of course there are ladies, gents, and styles from this blog that grab my attention more than others. I might need to note that I've started adding my own variations of poses, props, and character to make things a little more challenging for myself.

LATEST CHANGE TO MY SETUP

I don't have any fancy desk or anything. I don't even have a decent size room, but the room I'm in right now has to work as my living space, art space, entertainment space, etc. Sadly, for this reason, I had to ditch my drafting table, and I got a little creative. Lately I've been wishing I could afford some fancy custom made desk. Something that bridges the gap between drafting/animation table with office/digital art desk. Sadly there isn't a lot of furniture geared towards the artist of today (the ones that are are ridiculously overpriced), and since artists have a tendency to be particular about how they work I imagine it would be difficult to make a one desk fits al sort of situation.
Luckily for me I used two pieces of furniture in my room to get something a little closer to the setup I want. The monitors are a little higher than I'd like  and I wish the desk came out from the wall a little more with an adjustable piece to work on my art at an angle, but this is pretty much the closest I've come to my dream workspace. Wish I'd thought of it earlier. Also, my TV is next to my desk off to the right, so I can throw on some lord of the rings commentary in the background or Cowboy Bebop while I work. It's the little things that count.

SKETCH TUESDAY 111 MINNA CHARACTER PAINTINGS

I tried working with watercolors and a water pen this time around. Two things I almost never work with. Yes, I work with gouache primarily. However, it is a much more forgiving medium than watercolor and easier to work with when trying to rush to finish my work for the art lovers over at 111 Minna. That said I still really enjoyed it, and the paintings still came out close to what I wanted. It was a little more work and waiting, but I enjoy the challenges and effects of watercolor.
I sold my paintings for $25 each. Here are two that didn't sell on Tuesday. I'll be working on some mythological characters at the next Sketch Tuesday so keep posted.

BAY AREA ACTUAL OBSERVATIONS: RAINBOW BRITE

I saw this girl on bart and knew she had to be recorded into my sketchpad. The colors on her sweater and shoes were actually neon, but I didn't have neon pencils so I made do, and no that was not a wig. Her hair was actually dyed in a rainbow. One of my favorite reasons for riding BART in the bay area is getting to observe all the 'colorful' folks that frequent it.

JACK RABBIT SKETCHES FOR EASTER

They don't lay chocolate eggs or leave baskets full of future cavities atop a nest of non biodegradable plastic grass shreds, but hey who doesn't love jack rabbits. Enjoy Easter weekend everyone!

TRAIN HEIST EXTRAS FOR DESIGNING FOR SHOTS

Here's another sneak peek at some of the work I've been doing for my designing for shots class. This was my first time using a Cintiq for this sort of work and it made me wish I was fortunate enough to own one. Believe it or not I consider these sketches. The power of Wacom and they're magical yet overpriced gadgetry. There's no turing back once you see that a cintiq cuts your design time in half.

DESIGNING FOR SHOTS: DESERT PLANT LIFE

Here are some pictures from a couple weeks ago of plant life I worked on for the story "the Heist" in my designing for shots class. Even drab deserts can be beautiful. Enjoy!

SAN FRANCISCO CHINATOWN SKETCHCRAWL

I went to a sketch event in San Francisco last weekend. I walked around the Chinese street fair for a little while at first, but finally sat down and decided to draw. For some strange reason I have a tendency to choose some of the most complicated buildings. I'd like to say it's because I'm giving myself a challenge, but really it's just because that's what I like to draw. This one took a while to finish, but it's the second time my environmental sketch took two pages to complete. I actually really wished it was possible to spread it to a third page past St. Mary's church.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY FROM ALFRED HITCHCOCK AND REAR WINDOW

"Couples the spy together pry together"

This is a quick illustration of James Stewart and Grace Kelly from one of my favorite movies, Rear Window.  I rushed through the drawing on this one, and realized about halfway through that I was relying a little too much on people seeing the movie to decipher the story. Maybe it's just me overanalyzing my own work. I do still enjoy it and had fun working on it. I just might have to do another one in the future.

Austin Madison's Angry Harpy Challenge!

Sic' em!

Lost a little homework time over this one today, but any time I see a challenge to draw a mythological creature I have to take 'em up on it. I did this for a contest at Austin Madison's blog. It started as a Harpy chasing her prey and then for whatever reason I decided to add more even though it goes right off the page of my sketchbook and the rhythm gets a little crammed on the right hand side because of it. Also, now that I look at it the posing could be better, hah. I Still had a lot of fun on this one, and I'm enjoying the results. Now back to homework. Enjoy!

34TH WORLD WIDE SKETCHCRAWL: SAN FRANCISCO, FERRY BUILDING PART 2

Here is the second half of my handy Tombo brush pen sketches from the last SketchCrawl. There are a few other random sketches in the mix, which is part of the reason I didn't post them on the SketchCrawl forum, but most of these drawings are from that day. I think it's obvious which ones aren't.
